Alejandro Garnacho stunned spectators at Goodison Park on Sunday as he rifled home a Premier Goal of the Season contender to open up the scoring for Manchester United. The Argentinian international’s acrobatic effort left pundits purring. Gary Neville claimed it was the best overhead kick he had ever seen. But where does it rank among Express Sport‘s top 10 overhead kicks off all time?
10. Cristiano Ronaldo vs Juventus (2018)
Coming in at No 10 is Cristiano Ronaldo’s bicycle kick against Juventus for Real Madrid during their UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash in 2018. It takes a special strike to beat Gianluigi Buffon between the sticks and Ronaldo’s goal certainly lived up to that billing.
9. Gareth Bale vs Liverpool (2018)
Gareth Bale one-upped his Real Madrid team-mate in the final against Liverpool with a bicycle kick of his own. The Welshman rose 6ft 6inches in the air to get his foot over the ball as his effort whizzed past an unsuspecting Lorius Karius to put Los Blancos ahead.
8. Marco van Basten vs FC Den Bosch (1986)
Marco van Basten’s stunning bicycle kick is the consensus second-best goal of the Dutch superstar’s legendary career, beaten only by that volley in the Euro 1988 final. Van Basten’s effort couldn’t have been placed any better as it rattled in off the inside of the post before nestling in the back of the net.

7. Rivaldo vs Valencia (2001)
Rivaldo’s audacious strike from outside of the box against Valencia wasn’t just a beautiful goal, it was a beautiful goal that ensured Barcelona would qualify for next year’s Champions League. On the final day of the 2000/2001 La Liga season, the Catalonians needed to beat The Bats to ensure they dined at the top table in 2002. After a nervy end-to-end game, Rivaldo stamped their place in Europe with authority.
6. Phillip Mexes vs Anderlecht (2012)
Phillip Mexes was known more for his tough tackling than his goal-scoring ability but the French centre-back produced one of the greatest overhead kicks of all time during a Champions League tie against Anderlecht in 2012. His looping strike was a thing of beauty but somehow didn’t make it onto the Puskas nominations list. Criminal.
5. Oscarine Masuluke v Orlando Pirates (2016)
It might be the best goal ever scored by a goalkeeper. Baroka were trailing Orlando Pirates 1-0 in a South African Premier Division match when shot-stopper Oscarine Masuluke raced up the field to help out with a 96th-minute corner. With the very last kick of the game, Masuluke drew his side level courtesy of bicycle kick any world-class striker would be proud of.

4. Alejandro Garnacho vs Everton (2023)
Garancho’s goal comes in at No 4 on our list. There is no denying its brilliance even if it isn’t the best overhead kick scored by a Manchester United player.
3. Wayne Rooney vs Manchester City
That prize goes to Wayne Rooney, whose goal against Manchester City was very similar to Garnacho’s belter but it is the cleanness of the strike that edges it for us.
2. Mauro Bressan vs Barcelona (1999)
Mauro Bressan created something out of nothing against Barcelona in 1999, latching onto a loose ball from 25 yards out that wouldn’t have been saved by even the most well-positioned goalkeeper.
1. Zlatan Ibrahimovic vs England
Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored many stunners during his career but none were better than his 35-yard beauty against England. Joe Hart didn’t get his header quite right as he attempted to clear his lines while Zlatan was on hand to punish him with arguably the most athletic goal ever seen on a football pitch.
