Andy Robertson has admitted he let Scotland down after his error led to England’s second goal on Tuesday.
Gareth Southgate’s side took on the Scots at a boisterous Hampden Park for a clash which was a 150th Anniversary Heritage Match to commemorate England and Scotland’s first encounter in 1872.
The Three Lions started brightly and went ahead through a deft finish from Phil Foden before Robertson failed to clear the ball and Jude Bellingham pounced to make it 2-0 after 35 minutes.
Steve Clarke’s side were given a glimmer of hope when Harry Maguire netted an own goal, but Harry Kane sealed the victory with a third for the Three Lions nine minutes from time.
And, speaking after the game to beIN SPORTS, Liverpool defender Robertson rued his costly mistake and insisted he will do all he can to make up for it.

‘The second goal is completely my fault,’ he said. ‘Obviously that can’t happen. But you take it on the chin and try and react and in the second half we got ourselves back in the game.
‘We had a couple of half chances, the crowd were up and then we gave Harry Kane half a yard and he put the game to bed.
‘I hate letting this team down and that’s what I’ve done tonight. I hate costing goals and I just didn’t quite expect the ball to land at my feet and it has just fallen to him.’
He continued: ‘And when you’re coming up against Bellingham with the form he’s in, he’s not going to let you get away with it.
‘I had to apologise to the team and the manager. I did that and I just tried to have a positive reaction in the second half and I think I’ve done that but obviously I’ll be kicking myself tonight.’
The game was seen as a big test for Scotland after their stunning run of form over recent months.
After losing in a World Cup play-off to Ukraine in the summer of 2022, Clarke’s side have been sensational in Euro 2024 qualifying, winning five out of five games so far.
This means they are almost certain to be in Germany next summer and Robertson insisted the bitter defeat to England shouldn’t halt the team’s impressive progress.

He also insisted that Steve Clarke’s side shouldn’t lose their momentum despite the defeat
He added: ‘Today it was individual errors that probably cost us. We were disappointing in the first half, but were a lot more competitive in the second.
‘It just shows we’ve still got room for improvement and we have to work hard. But it’s important this doesn’t stop our momentum.
‘The objective this week was to make it five wins out of five in qualifiers and the England game wasn’t discussed until the Cyprus match was out of the way (Scotland won 3-0 on Friday).
‘We are in a good moment and we must remember that.’
