Riots erupted on the streets of Santos after their football club dropped into the second division for the first time ever.
For the entirety of their 111-year history, Santos have played in the Brazilian top tier. The costal city team were one of three clubs, along with Sao Paulo and Flamengo, who never dropped down – but that all changed on Wednesday.
Santos had been slipping and sliding down the table following a woeful run of form that had seen them winless in five. And a 96th minute winner from Juan Martin Lucero, of Fortaleza, ensured Santos finished one point behind City Football Group-owned Bahia.

Santos needed a lot to go against them if they were to be relegated, and, amazingly, it all went wrong. The famous old side were 15th heading into the final day with Vasco da Gama on 42 points and Bahia on 41 points both below them in the table.
There was still one relegation spot to be decided, but Vasco and Bahia both won their games. Bahia beat Atletico Mineiro – who needed three points to win the title – while Vasco downed recent Copa Sudamericana finalists Red Bull Bragantino.

Santos fans were livid, and police had to hold back fans who were trying to enter the pitch, while players fled to the safety of the changing rooms. One banner shown by fans in the stadium read: "Second, sometimes. In the second, never.”
And away from the stadium, videos showed cars were set on fire as fans took out their frustrations on the surroundings. According to reports in Brazil, one of these cars set alight belonged to Santos' Mendoza.
In a video shared by TNT Brazil shows smoke arising from fires across the city. Riot police were deployed to the streets to try and disperse the crowds – who were feeling a mixture of anger and disbelief.
Santos is one of the most famous teams in South America – and they have claimed the Copa Libertadores, South America's answer to the Champions League, on three separate occasions.
It has also produced some of the planet's best players, with Pele spending almost the entirety of his career with the side. While, in recent years, Neymar, Robinho, and current Real Madrid star Rodrygo have all emerged from Santos' academy.
