Pundits and fans agree over Alan Pardew’s new ‘sin bin’ rule for Premier League

Alan Pardew has proposed a new ‘sin bin’ rule in football to combat cheap yellow cards – and remarkably it has pundits and fans alike in agreement.

The former Premier League manager’s radical idea comes after a rise in bookings for time wasting and dissent offences, as per the new rules introduced at the beginning of the season.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Pardew detailed his new plans in the wake of Liverpool’s 2-1 victory away against Newcastle United, which saw Trent Alexander-Arnold controversially not sent off for a second bookable offence after receiving a yellow card just minutes into the game for time wasting.

Pardew said: “So I think, and it is a lesser offence, in my opinion than a straight red, when you get a yellow card and there is a second yellow card I think it should be a sin bin, and I think it will be good for the game.

Pardew suggested that football should follow in the steps of rugby union and adopt a 20 minute sin bin penalty for the aggressing player.

He added: “It gives the advantage to the opposition for that period, and then they go come back on and the game carries on.

Former Republic of Ireland international and commentator Andy Townsend and Rangers legend Ally McCoist were both on the show alongside Pardew, and both gave their backing to the idea.

Townsend said: “He (Pardew) is 100% right that the nature of some of the yellows are incredibly soft and very minor technicalities you can get a yellow card for.

The only thing that three former players couldn’t agree on was whether or not such a law would be introduced.

Townsend claimed it’s “probably too radical for the powers that be, I just don’t think it would, but I actually think there’s a lot of sense in that.”

But McCoist soon interrupted Townsend, saying: “By the way, I actually disagree with you, I think we will see it eventually.”

And fans on Twitter also agreed with the trio’s bold new idea, with one fan saying: “It’s true, taking a little longer to take a throw-in or goal kick does not warrant a sending off. 15 mins sin bin is a good shout.”

A second added: “It makes sense with the now very strict rules in place around dissent and the cracking down on time wasting. The sin bin should be for a meaningful amount of time like 10-20 mins so there’s enough time for the effect of being a player down can be impacted without ruining the game.”

Townsend later added: “I like the idea of that 20 minute period, where the other team is on you, come on you’ve got a chance now, now you’ve got the numerical advantage.

“But as we saw up at Newcastle at the weekend, numerical advantage doesn’t always work does it.”
