Manchester United icon Paul Scholes received a telling-off from TNT Sports host Laura Woods as he was accused of breaking one of the broadcaster’s microphones during their Champions League coverage. The pair were previewing United’s clash with Copenhagen alongside Rio Ferdinand, but Scholes suffered an issue with some of the equipment.
As Scholes was providing his analysis before the game, viewers had a difficult time hearing the former United midfielder as his microphone appeared to stop working. Woods then had to hold her mic up to Scholes before the behind-the-scenes crew were able to find a spare.
At the end of the segment, Woods joked to Scholes as she said: “Stop breaking the mics… what are you doing?” Before Ferdinand added: “He’s throwing them away!” Scholes then mimicked throwing his mic in frustration as he was not able to communicate with the viewers.
Fortunately, the audio issues were fixed once the team returned from the break and Scholes was able to discuss the faltering United team and Erik ten Hag’s job security while Sir Jim Ratcliffe attempts to purchase a 25 per cent stake in the club. He has been tipped to also oversee the sporting side of United should the deal go through, bringing fresh scrutiny over the head coach.

“I think it’s hard to say,” Scholes replied when asked about Ten Hag’s future with Ratcliffe involved. “I think he’s been a very good coach so far, I like him. He’s been ruthless in a job that is incredibly difficult, he’s essentially been thrown out to the lions in the sense of answering every single question thrown at him by the media and I think he’s handled it really well.
“Has he put a team together that is good enough to challenge for the Premier League? No, but it looked like a good start towards the end of last season.

“We’ve come into the summer and the recruitment hasn’t been there, it’s not at the level of competing with the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool. There’s still a lot of work to do but he’s the right man, whether Jim is coming in to bring someone else in or not.”
Scholes’ mic may have not been the only piece of faulty equipment at Old Trafford on the night.
Referee Marco Guida blew up 15 seconds early for the half-time whistle and he clearly had seen enough of the dismal first 45 minutes. Perhaps his stopwatch had suffered the same fate as the TNT mic and malfunctioned.
