- Montiel has denied any involvement and Nottingham Forest are ‘satisfied’
Nottingham Forest said they have ‘conducted due diligence and are fully satisfied’ with new signing Gonzalo Montiel, though he is under investigation for an alleged rape.
Montiel is one of two suspects being investigated over the alleged crime from a party at his home in January 2019 after a woman accused three men of raping her.
This week, Forest finalised a £9m deal to bring the right-back from Sevilla to the City Ground after a season during which he scored the winning penalties in the World Cup and the Europa League.
The Athletic sent Nottingham Forest a list of questions relating to the case.
In response, Forest said: ‘The club has conducted due diligence and we are fully satisfied following conversations with his representatives.’
That said, The Athletic were told by the prosecutor’s office and the alleged victim’s lawyer that Nottingham Forest had not been in touch with them.
Nottingham Forest say they have ‘conducted due diligence’ and are ‘fullly satisfied’ after speaking with his representatives about an alleged rape
Montiel is under investigation after a woman alleed that she was raped by three men in January 2019 and identified Montiel
The prosecutor in charge of the case told The Athletic that the case is active.
Evidence and testimonies are still being sought and they hope to speak with more people who were at the party.
Montiel is being investigated in a case where the woman was says she was raped by three men and denied any involvement. Inititially, the alleged victim went to the police on January 2, 2019, but she said she could not remember anything about the alleged rape.
She was not able to name or describe the men allegedly involved, and the case was closed when she did not reply to a request for more information, but then the case was reopened this year after she made anonymous TV appearances speaking about it.
In her testimony to prosecutors, the woman said that she was now able to recall more details as a result of psychological therapy. Montiel is the only one she claimed to be able to identify.
She said: ‘I remember Gonzalo over me and he was obviously abusing me because it was sex that I hadn’t consented to and it was rough, not like in his house when we had consensual sex.’
Montiel denies any involvement in the alleged crime. He was the only individual that the alleged victim named in her testiomny
According to Montiel’s statement to prosecutors in June, on the night of the alleged rape, he consistently left the house and returned as he was collecting people and alcohol to bring to the event.
He said that at 6am he took a sick friend to their house, and that when he returned the alleged victim was ‘screaming, angry and saying that it was all my fault because I hadn’t looked after her’. Hesclaimed he ‘didn’t understand what she meant’.
In response to being quizzed on why the lady would make the allegations, he said he did not know and that it ‘brought shame on my whole family’.
