Match of the Day show axed as BBC confirm programme will ‘no longer continue’

The BBC have reportedly axed Match of the Day spin-off MOTDx.

The show was launched in 2019 as part of the Beeb's push to target a younger audience. Hosted by Jermaine Jenas, it mixed Premier League coverage with celebrities, music, fashion and culture.

But the Thursday evening time slot, initially on BBC Two before being moved to the re-launched BBC Three, didn't prove a hit, and the show has now been quietly cancelled, according to The Telegraph.

A BBC spokesperson told the publication the decision had been made prior to the start of this season so wasn't reflective of how it had performed in recent weeks.

“We have made some changes to our football output this season which means we will be producing even more digital content for audiences across BBC Sport platforms," they said.

“Whilst we are proud of MOTDx and would like to thank everyone involved, it will no longer continue.”

It comes after reports emerged last month that Football Focus, the BBC's Saturday lunchtime football programme of 22 years, has lost a third of its viewership. Crisis talks were held but in a statement sent to Daily Star Sport, a spokesperson insisted it wasn't at risk.

“Football Focus continues to herald the start of a whole weekend packed full of sporting coverage for fans across BBC Sport, including radio, our website and Player," they said.

“Week-on-week it is the most watched programme during that time slot and iPlayer viewing figures are also strong, so we know its popularity is enduring for fans, wherever they choose to watch.”
