Man Utd can hijack Arsenal transfer to give Erik ten Hag perfect late signing

Manchester United can hijack Kieran Tierney’s move to Real Sociedad to solve Erik ten Hag’s transfer dilemma. The Red Devils are in the market for a left-back and the Arsenal star could be the perfect signing.

United are short on left-backs following the injury suffered by Luke Shaw. The unspecified issue is set to keep the England star out for a number of weeks.

It adds to an increasing injury list for Ten Hag, who is also without summer signings Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund. Tyrell Malacia, the obvious replacement for Shaw, is also injured and did not feature in any of the pre-season friendlies.

The Manchester Evening News claimed on Friday that United are hoping to add left-back reinforcement before next week’s transfer deadline. The plan is to bring in a player on a short-term deal, which would likely be a loan.

Tierney looks set to leave Arsenal after falling down the pecking order at the Emirates. The Scot made just five Premier League starts last season and hasn’t been in either of the match-day squads so far this term.

Arsenal are close to finalising an agreement with Real Sociedad for Tierney. He is set to move to the La Liga club on a season-long loan deal without an option to buy.

Arsenal initially wanted to sell Tierney, with Newcastle showing an interest earlier in the window. However, they have given in and are set to agree on a temporary departure with a small loan fee.

This is where United could step in and hijack a deal. Ten Hag only wants a player on loan and Arsenal have shown they are willing to facilitate that move for Tierney.

The 26-year-old has had injury problems of his own but is currently fit and played in the recent Community Shield win over Manchester City. United could do a lot worse than exploring the possibility of luring Tierney to Old Trafford.

Tierney would provide experience of English football, having played 124 times for Arsenal since joining from Celtic in 2019. Whether Mikel Arteta would be willing to let Tierney join a direct rival remains to be seen.

Another potential issue would be that Tierney would be unable to play against his parent club. United visit the Emirates in nine days’ time and perhaps are targeting a new signing to be able to play in that game.

Diogo Dalot could fill in for that match if needs be and will likely do so against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Tierney’s experience in the Champions League with Celtic may also be vital.

He skippered Celtic for his final two seasons in Scotland and would provide more leadership in the United dressing room. The defeat to Tottenham last week perhaps showed there is still room for improvement in that area.
