Liverpool star Darwin Nunez ‘not happy’ as Jurgen Klopp refuses to change mind

Luis Diaz could be Liverpool's star player this season

Jurgen Klopp has revealed Darwin Nunez’s fury at not starting Liverpool’s first three games of the season against Chelsea, Bournemouth and Newcastle. Klopp opted to play Diogo Jota and Cody Gakpo down the middle in the Reds’ opening Premier League fixtures – much to the dismay of Nunez, who has been demoted to the bench.

Though the Uruguayan will be hoping he has made a case to become a regular starter after bagging two late goals as a sub to secure Liverpool a sensational 2-1 win away at St Marys’. However, Klopp insists he will continue to rotate between Nunez, Gakpo and Jota as the Reds look to adapt to a new style of play with their revamped squad.

“He was obviously fired up about not starting and put all his energy in those two shots,” said Klopp after the game.

“It’s clear he is not happy – how can a player be happy when he’s not starting? the thing is it’s early in the season we need to find stability, we need to find the formation and get results,” he added.  “And then we’ll play every three days anyway and everybody will play, there’s no doubt about that

The 23/24 home shirt for Liverpool pays homage to the past of the club, as well as collaborator Nike, with a strong 1970s influence. The iconic red, capped with bold white cuffs and collar really does invoke that classic Liverpool FC style while adding a cool retro touch

“Even if Darwin had started the first three games he would not play more games afterwards, because of the intensity, he can’t.

“So we need to find a way of play again, and that is what we try to create, this is a completely new team with team players and it needs time. So for yes for him, he scores two goals and gets a smile on his face, and rightly so.

“But for the team, it was super important that we got something like that. We need these kinds of things to grow together. You cannot create it, you need to force it pretty much and boy did I enjoy that today with the last-minute goal.”
