Liverpool ‘make approach for Max Eberl’ to be their new sporting director, but ‘face competition from Bayern Munich’ to appoint the former RB Leipzig man
- Eberl was sacked by RB Leipzig in September with ‘a lack of commitment’ cited
- He was linked to a move to Bayern though a potential deal has not materialised
- Current Liverpool director Jorg Schmadtke has only signed a sort-term contract
Liverpool have reportedly approached Max Eberl over becoming the club’s new sporting director.
The Reds are on the hunt for a new director with current man Jorg Schmadtke signing only a one-year contract after replacing Julian Ward.
Eberl is believed to be high in demand, with BILD reporting that Jurgen Klopp’s side will go head-to-head with Bayern Munich to secure the 50-year-old’s signature.
He has been out of work since September after being sacked by RB Leipzig, with the club citing a lack of commitment to the role following links with a move to Bayern while he was in the role.
Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan is said to have contacted Eberl over an agreement, with it hoped a deal can be reached for an appointment soon.

Eberl, a right back, enjoyed a playing career in Germany, turning out for the likes of Bayern and Borussia Monchengladbach, while he was also a Germany U21 international.
After retiring in 2005, he went into a managerial role with Monchengladbach, where he was academy manager for three years before stepping up to become director of sport for well over a decade.
He moved onto Leipzig in December 2022, but was let go after just nine months in September this year following interest from the German champions.
It is hoped that the fact Eberl shares the same agent as Klopp could be a positive factor in negotiations.
He has been credited with helping the careers of a nunber of players that have passed through the Bundesliga, including Marco Reus, Granit Xhaka and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
He is thought to have a close relationship with Bayern board member Uli Hoeness, though the fact he’s not joined the club gives Liverpool hope that they will be able to do a deal.
Schmadtke, meanwhile has not ruled out staying longer at Liverpool, thought it is unlikely he will do so.
