Getafe manager Jose Bordalas has inisisted Real Madrid’s Jude Bellingham was part of the reason Mason Greenwood made the move to La Liga.
Greenwood joined the Spanish side on loan this summer, but hasn’t played competitive football since December 2021, after he was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of a number of offences including attempted rape.
The former England international was suspended by Manchester United at the time and has returned to football after the Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped the charges due key witnesses withdrawals and new material coming to light.
United believed that Greenwood should move on from the club to continue his career, and the 21-year-old forward headed to Spain with friend Bellingham’s input supposedly a deciding factor.

Speaking to Radio Marca Bordalas insisted: ‘Greenwood is friends with Bellingham, and he advised him to come to the Spanish league.
‘He is a fantastic player. You have to be patient, calm, he hasn’t played in a year-and-a-half.
‘We and his colleagues are helping him. He is integrating in a sensational way and I hope he can help us.’
Getafe currently sit fourteenth in the league table after a disappointing start to the season, winning just one game.
Fans and the club itself met the arrival of Greenwood with jubilation, with supporters celebrating in the street and Getafe’s social media team releasing many videos and images of the Englishman.
The forward could be handed his first start this Sunday as Getafe take on Osasuna.
Bordalas continued to comment on the transfer disclosing: ‘It was a surprise, we never thought we could get a player like that.
‘But they got in touch with our sporting director (Ruben Reyes), we talked, we didn’t think it could happen but both sides made an effort [financially].’
