Ange Postecoglou laments VAR’s impact after Chelsea defeat
Chelsea icon John Terry has hilariously poked fun at James Maddison on social media after the Blues beat nine-man Tottenham 4-1 on Monday. In a chaotic game, the north Londoners had two men sent off while five goals were disallowed.
Spurs had Cristian Romero and Destiny Udogie dismissed as their unbeaten Premier League run came to a bitter end. Maddison and Micky van de Ven hobbled off with injuries in a major worry for head coach Ange Postecoglou.
Against a depleted Spurs team, Chelsea ran riot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, although initially struggled to break down the nine men. Nicolas Jackson’s late hat-trick sealed a big victory after Cole Palmer netted a first-half penalty.
Club legend Terry was in a celebratory mood after the game, sharing snaps of him celebrating alongside wife Toni. The Instagram caption read: “When @chelseafc beat Spurs 4-1 on a school night and the tequila comes out, and you end up dancing and singing on the bar.”

The post caught the attention of Maddison, who pointed out that it was not quite as easy a win for Chelsea as Terry had suggested. Spurs were on top for the opening 15 minutes and could have led 2-0 had Son Heung-min been onside, before Romero and Udogie were sent off.
“Jesus, you have your eyes closed when it was 11 v 11 first 15, JT?” Maddison commented alongside an emoji depicting a monkey covering its eyes.
But former England defender Terry had the last laugh. Referencing Chelsea’s excellent record against Spurs over the years, he brutally responded: “Don’t worry mate, you will get used to it!”

Chelsea have now lost just two of their last 14 meetings with London rivals Spurs, dating back to 2019. Boss Mauricio Pochettino insisted that this week’s victory was deserved despite his side’s struggle to break down nine men in the second half.
“I think we deserved to win. We forced them to make too many mistakes. I think Tottenham was better in the first 15 minutes and then I think we matched the game,” the Argentine, who previously managed Spurs, reflected.
“I think our performance was good and we forced them to make a mistake. I think everything that you can see during the game, I think was fair. I think we compare when Tottenham beat Liverpool like today, a similar game like today. But today I think everything that happened in the game was fair.”
