Howard Webb once played a role in a match being replayed following a monumental refereeing blunder – but the Premier League won't follow suit.
The former Prem ref, who took charge of the 2010 World Cup final, spent five years in the United States as first VAR manager for the Professional Referee Organisation and later their general manager. After moving into the leading role, Pittsburgh Riverhounds missed out on a vital win against second-tier rivals Miami FC.
The game finished goalless after a defender passed the ball past his own keeper into the net – and it was ruled out because the officials thought it took place directly from the free-kick.

UPDATE: Spurs vs Liverpool replay won't happen despite VAR fiasco as Prem rule doesn't enforce it
A corner was awarded as per not being able to score an own goal from a free-kick unless it touches someone else, but that hadn't actually been in the case following a pass between team-mates.
League officials alongside PRO as well as IFAB (International Football Association Board) judged that the game should be restarted from the minute that the mistake was made, playing the final 23 minutes.
USL President Jake Edwards said at the time: "This extraordinarily rare circumstance necessitated the decision to ask two of our clubs to replay the remainder of a match with the score at 1-0.

"In consultation with PRO (Professional Referee Organization) and IFAB , we have taken this action to protect the integrity of the League, our competition, and the sport of soccer.
"We thank The Miami FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC for their understanding and commitment to the integrity of our competition."
Although Webb was involved in that call before his 2022 return as PGMOL chief, the blunder of VAR Darren England won't lead to a resumption of play or a full replay.

Premier League bosses have been adamant that a replay would not be considered and is not a possibility under their rules, despite VAR failing to overturn an incorrect offside call.
The Premier League’s handbook does outline provisions for league matches to be replayed, under rule L.18/W.51, but only for a breach of rules, such as a club fielding an ineligible player in a game, which was not the case at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
That means that Jurgen Klopp will not be able to get his request, with Luis Diaz made to rue what should've been his fourth goal of the season.
