Tim Davie admits regret over Gary Lineker affair
Gary Lineker dropped a hint about the next Match of the Day host as he presented the latest episode of the BBC show on Saturday night. The 62-year-old suggested that Jermaine Jenas is being lined up as the next presenter of the popular highlights programme after being joined by the ex-Newcastle midfielder in the studio.
Jenas and former Wales international Ashley Williams were alongside Lineker to give their thoughts on Saturday’s matches, with Everton’s 3-2 victory over Crystal Palace among the pick of the bunch. Jenas turned the tables on Lineker as he asked the ex-striker for his thoughts about a potential penalty incident.
Lineker gave his verdict and then asked: “You want this job?” Jenas replied: “No, no, not yet,” and then added: “Later.”
Jenas has already presented Match of the Day 2 and spin-off show MOTDx, which was recently axed after four years. He also regularly presents The One Show. And the 40-year-old has already opened up about his aspirations to one day take over from Lineker on the BBC’s flagship football programme.

“I would obviously be up for it,” the former player told the Daily Mail earlier this year. “It’s Match of the Day and it would be a great opportunity.”
And in an interview with The Mirror, Jenas explained: “I still really enjoy the punditry side of things and analysing games of football, just because of my love of the game. But I think as you evolve as an individual, you wanna keep challenging yourself and keep testing yourself.
“I always felt that presenting alongside my experience in the game was gonna be a nice blend, especially given what I saw when I was around Gary and other presenters who’ve crossed over from a sporting background to television.”

Saturday’s Match of the Day provided viewers with plenty of entertainment as they were treated to 15 goals from the day’s five matches. As well as the showdown at Selhurst Park, football fans were able to witness Wolves’ shock 2-1 win against Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham and Bournemouth’s surprise 2-0 victory over Newcastle. Arsenal’s 3-1 triumph over Burnley came next, with Manchester United’s 1-0 win against Luton being selected as the final match.
Match of the Day began airing in August 1964, with Kenneth Wolstenholme taking on the presenting duties. The show has gone on to have five more permanent hosts as David Coleman, Jimmy Hill, Bob Wilson and Des Lynam all sat in the hotseat before Lineker was handed the role in 1999.
