Former Man United starlet is now struggling for minutes in Poland

Cameron Borthwick-Jackson was once a favourite of Louis Van Gaal at Manchester United, but his career has now taken a turn for the worse.

The former Red Devils full-back is now struggling for game time in Poland following his release from Burton Albion in the summer.

Borthwick-Jackson, 26, burst onto the scene in 2015 when he made his debut for United against West Bromwich Albion.

He was handed his first senior start not long after following a defensive injury crisis which forced Van Gaal to give the youngsters a chance.

It is fair to say that Borthwick-Jackson grabbed the opportunity with both hands – with the defender going on to make 14 appearances in the 2015-16 campaign.

Speaking about the defender back in 2015, Van Gaal revealed he was impressed by Borthwick-Jackson.

‘I have seen him once or twice and I have been impressed by him,’ said Van Gaal.

‘I knew that Marouane Fellaini was injured, so I talked with Warren Joyce and asked what he had for me.

‘I’m always talking with him or Paul McGuinness, and he said at the moment the left full-back is in good shape.

‘I needed a left full-back because Marcos Rojo had played a few games in a row, so I have to take into account that it might be too much.

‘I put Cameron in the line-up without any fear, and I have to say he did very well.’

Despite impressing many at Old Trafford, the defender never played for the Red Devils again. He had unsuccessful loans with the likes of Wolves, Leeds, Scunthorpe, Tranmere and Oldham before he was released in 2020.

The 26-year-old joined Oldham in the same year, before signing for Burton Albion in 2021 – where he would go on to make over 70 appearances, but was released by the club in the summer.

He now plies his trade with Polish side Slask Wroclaw, but has failed to establish himself as a first team regular so far this season.

The defender has played just a single minute this season – featuring in a 1-1 draw with Gornik Zabrze back in August.

Borthwick-Jackson has either missed out on the matchday squad or has been named on the bench since his debut for the Polish side.
