Fans joked that Chelsea “are back” after suffering a woeful 4-1 defeat at Newcastle on Saturday.
Hopes of Mauricio Pochettino’s side continuing their impressive performances from before the international break were immediately dashed when the Magpies took the lead 13 minutes in, courtesy of Alexander Isak.
Chelsea managed to equalise 10 minutes later with Raheem Sterling’s stunning free-kick, but crumbled in the second half as Jamaal Lascelles and Joelinton put the game out of reach. And with Anthony Gordon netting the fourth for the home side at St. James’ Park, both the performance and result were more reminiscent of Chelsea’s dismal showing over the past year and a half.

Individual mistakes were decisive, with Thiago Silva gifting Newcastle a goal and Reece James picking up a red card. And Blues supporters and rival fans took to social media to poke fun at Chelsea’s return to mediocrity, having secured a 4-4 draw against Manchester City in a thrilling fight back before the international break.
“Chelsea are back,” one user tweeted, while another added: “This is just embarrassing.”
