Spain stars of the past and present have taken to social media to react to Luis Rubiales’ refusal to step down as FA president following his offensive behaviour at the Women’s World Cup.
Rubiales sparked outrage when he kissed Spain starr Jenni Hermoso on the lips as she collected her medal after her side’s 1-0 win over England in the Women’s World Cup final.
The Spaniard was also shown grabbing his crotch in footage while standing near Queen Lerizia of Spain and her 16-year-old daughter.
Rubiales has since refused to resign from his role as Spanish Football Federation president, blaming ‘false feminism’ for a ‘social murder’ against him.
Reacting to the bizarre press conference, Spain goalkeepers David de Gea and Iker Casillas ripped into Rubiales.

Listening to the Spainish FA president refuse to resign, former Manchester United goalkeeper De Gea wrote: ‘My ears are bleeding’.
This was supported by Real Madrid and Spain legend Casillas, who blasted Rubiales, calling him ’embarrassing’ before continuing to say: ‘We should spend these 5 days talking about our girls!
‘Of the joy they gave us all! To boast of a title that we did not have in women’s football but…’
Real Betis forward Borja Iglesias stated that he was ‘freaking out’ after watching the press conference.
Former Arsenal and Barcelona defender Hector Bellerin joined in with the criticism, taking to Instagram to write: ‘The narcissist never believes they have made a mistake, they are able to lie, manipulate the truth and make the victim guilty in order to retain their power over others.’
Journalist Guillem Balague added on on the topic as he took to Twitter to say: ‘Against all the reporting, against the advice of people close to him, against the wish of the government (who will now go after him), Rubiales suprises even his close circle and insists he will not resign.
‘Embarrassing, his explanations are obsolete (he says he kissed Jenni as a daughter).
‘He will have to be pushed out.’
Spain stars of the past and present, as well as key public figures, reacted to Rubiales’ refusal to step down
La Liga president Javier Tebas followed up as he branded Rubiales a liar in a long statement on Twitter.
‘I must admit that it has been very difficult to explain what is happening with Luis Rubiales during these years,’ he wrote.
‘I have the feeling that many people, until now, did not understand what the members of the football estates have to live in dealing with him as president of the RFEF.
‘The misogynistic gestures, the profane expressions, the protocol disaster and the insults of this latest global embarrassment are not a surprise and had obvious antecedents that should have prevented a new victim (which should not be in focus).
‘Insults, bravado, blackmail, threats, espionage and persecution, fraudulently using federative bodies, we suffer from and have denounced many: Professional men’s and women’s football, futsal, amateur football clubs, associations of soccer players, territorial presidents, presidents of the Higher Sports Council, integrity directors, ministers, referees, players… The list of women and men aggrieved by Luis Rubiales these years is too long and this must stop.
The Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain took to Twitter to criticise Rubiales
‘Rubiales is interested in lying and presenting me as a conspirator to hide himself in a false equidistance and get out of the way of his scandals and excesses. Nothing is further from reality. Although the crude victimization trick has worked too many times, this time to continue trying it is simply ridiculous, it is impossible to attribute his misogynistic and despicable behavior to any absurd conspiracy when the reputational damage for all of Spanish football is already inevitable.’
This was supported by Yolanda Diaz, the Second Deputy Prime Minister of Spain, who urged Rubiales to resign as she said: ‘Mr. Rubiales still does not know where he is or what he has done. It is not up to scratch.
‘You should resign now and save us the embarrassment’.
It remains to be seen as to whether this backlash will play a part in any decision that is set to be made, with Rubiales making it clear that he does not intend to resign on his own accord.
