Liverpool star Andy Robertson is set to be sidelined for three months with a shoulder injury.

Last week in Scotland's 2-0 defeat to Spain during their Euro 2024 qualifier, the left-back collided with opposition keeper Unai Simon, which left him in severe discomfort. The 29-year-old had to be substituted by Steve Clarke with Robertson cradling his arm in his shirt following the clash in Seville.

And it has now been confirmed that the collision between Robertson and Simon left the Reds defender with a dislocated shoulder. The Athletic's James Pearce reports Robertson is set to undergo surgery on his right shoulder, which will sideline him for around three months.

The Scotsman could have returned to action within four weeks without undergoing surgery. However, Liverpool instead opted to resolve the problem with an operation, which allays the risk of it happening again.

That would make it unlikely Robertson will play again until the turn of the year. And during that time, it also means he will miss this weekend's Merseyside derby against Everton, as well as games against Man United, Arsenal and Newcastle United, who Liverpool host on December 30 at Anfield.

While Robertson's injury means back-up Kostas Tsimikas will be handed more minutes by Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool's options behind the Greek defender look thin. That will likely mean Klopp will have to rely upon either a defender to serve as a makeshift full-back in the event Tsimikas gets injury, or place his faith in academy prospects to cover in Robertson's absence.
