Arsenal fans reckoned Aaron Ramsdale did himself no favours within the first 90 seconds of their 3-1 defeat to West Ham.

The England international has endured a tough start to the season, losing his starting spot to summer arrival David Raya. Boss Mikel Arteta appears to favour the Spaniard's ball-playing abilities, although he's not been entirely convincing in between the sticks.

Wednesday's trip to the London Stadium for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup saw Ramsdale given an opportunity to stake his claim again as he was named in goal – but it didn't get off to the best of starts for him.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one Gooner wrote: "Aaron Ramsdale's first touch is to control the ball, and smash it as far as possible, near to no Arsenal players. Not necessarily the wrong option, but a fair indication of why he's not Arteta's No 1!"

That was echoed by another fan who posted: "One minute into the game you can already understand why Ramsdale doesn't play anymore hahaha."

"Ramsdale first hoof to nobody," bemoaned a third, while a fourth commented: "Ramsdale hoofing the ball out for no reason LOOOOL." And a fifth questioned: "What was that kick from Ramsdale? Is he intentionally winding up Arteta?"

Speaking about him pre-match, Arteta said: “Every week, I haven't seen anything different. More determination, more hunger to play, he's got another opportunity like many others to do what he's been doing, nothing different."

Unfortunately for Ramsdale, it didn't get any better for him in the first half. Ben White nodded into his own net from a West Ham corner.

The Gunners keeper was being tugged back by Thomas Soucek, but with no VAR until the semi-finals of the competition, the goal stood.

There was little he could do as the Hammers made it 2-0 after the break, with Mohammed Kudus cutting in on his left foot and finishing low into the bottom corner.

And a deflection deceived him as Jarrod Bowen made it three on the hour. Martin Odegaard scored a consolation with the final kick of the game, with the hosts progressing to the quarter-finals.
