North Melbourne’s bid for grand final redemption has been boosted by star Demon Libby Birch seeking a trade to the Kangaroos.
The two-time AFLW premiership winner has officially requested the move, a source familiar with the potential trade, who would not be quoted because details had not been finalised, said.

The uncontracted Birch had been weighing up her options, including meeting with Hawthorn this week. The Kangaroos, however, won the battle for the dual All-Australian defender and premiership star with the Western Bulldogs (2018) and Demons (2022).
Should the deal go ahead, Birch will add significant experience and class across half-back, as the Roos look to make amends for their grand final loss to the Brisbane Lions.
The Kangaroos did not wish to comment.
The Demons are overhauling their list, although skipper Kate Hore and vice-captain Tyla Hanks have signed until the end of 2027.
While the Hawks missed out on Birch, they have secured Melbourne premiership pair Casey Sherriff and Eliza West.
In exchange for Sherriff, West and pick No.16, the Hawks have dealt pick No.5 and No.26 to the Demons.
Hawthorn AFLW list manager Mitchell Cashion said West and Sherriff will add experience.
“In Casey, we’re getting a versatile player with a high footy IQ,” Cashion said.

“While experiencing success in a number of positions with the Demons, coming to the Hawks gives her a great opportunity to excel in one position.
“Eliza is a strong inside midfielder who never gives up at the contest. She is a proven finals player and will provide additional physicality and pressure in our midfield.”
Birch’s expected move came as veteran Kangaroo Emma Kearney, 34, signed a two-year contract extension. Kearney was an All-Australian for the eighth time this season, having averaged 20 disposals per game at half-back. She ranked fourth in the competition for intercept possessions and sixth for rebound 50s.
“From the moment Kearns walked through the doors in 2019, our club has been better for it,” North Melbourne’s head of women’s football Nathan Hrovat said.
“From the very beginning, she has been a key driver of getting our AFLW program to where it is today.
“Drive, focus and ferocity are synonymous with the Kearney name. Kearns has always led from the front. She will do whatever it takes to achieve the ultimate team success.”
Kearney joins Ash Riddell, Jas Garner and Mia King in signing new deals as the AFLW trade and draft periods get busy.
