Care reflects on England’s Rugby World Cup win over Chile
England Rugby World Cup star Danny Care has called for Premiership games to be halted during Six Nations tournaments to ensure fans have more opportunities to see players like Owen Farrell in club action. Care was handed his first start of the Rugby World Cup when England thrashed Chile 71-0 in their third game of the tournament last month.
The Six Nations takes place every year between early February and late March, with England last winning the tournament in 2020 under former coach Eddie Jones. But under current regulations, Premiership matches continue while the tournament is being played. And that means Care and his England team-mates are forced to miss club matches during that period.
Following the Covid-19 pandemic, a whole host of rugby clubs suffered financial issues as they struggled to balance the books. Former Premiership sides Worcester Warriors, Wasps and London Irish have all gone bust over the last year, leaving just 10 teams in England’s top-flight.
And Care believes the reduction in teams has provided rugby chiefs in England with an opportunity to make changes. “Now with the club game going down to 10 teams there automatically is going to be less games for the lads,” the scrum-half told the BBC.

“I’ve always pushed and been an advocate for Premiership games to not be played during Six Nations windows. I think fans, clubs, everyone wants that. You want to see your best players playing – clubs want to have the best players available, which helps everything in terms of TV revenues and fans coming to stadiums.
“They want to see Owen Farrell playing for Saracens as many times as he can. So [if] there’s ways and structures around to do that, then [I’m] all for it.

“I think I’ve said a few times here, there are a lot of cleverer and smarter people than me who hopefully are working on these decisions – hopefully they get it right and the game, especially in England, can flourish.”
Meanwhile, Care has insisted players would be willing to agree to hybrid contracts, where the salaries of the top players would be paid by the RFU as well as clubs. “England needs to have the best players playing in England,” the 36-year-old added. “If there are ways we can do that, which might help the club game and help clubs be more sustainable, I think the players would be on board with that.”
