Daniil Medvedev has had an eventful round of 16 tie with Alexander Zverev at Indian Wells, as the Russian had a meltdown and threatened to spend a long time in the toilet in an outburst at the umpire. He then went down with a worrying injury and was forced to call a medical time out.

Following Medvedev’s third-round win over Ilya Ivashka he lashed out at the umpire and threatened to “pee slowly” as he struggled to cope with the speed of the court.

Once again he made the same threat to the umpire against Zverev, as he was caught saying: “Freaking disgrace to the sport. Should be banned from playing here. They call it hardcourts.

“I don’t care if I get a time violation. I’m going to the toilet for however long. If they make us play here, I can do whatever I want. I don’t care.”

He later rolled his ankle in the second set ahead at 3-2, after losing the first 7-6 to Zverev. The 27-year-old was treated in his chair before his opponent came across to show his support, having suffered serious injuries himself in the past.

After taking a nasty fall he received treatment to get his ankle strapped and then returned to court to continue the match, striking the ball well and has since not scolded the officials any further.
