Oakfield Mahogany hoping to recapture wining form at Scone

He’s had to cool his heels for more than three months, but promising provincial three-year-old Oakfield Mahogany returns to the scene of his debut success at Monday’s feature Scone meeting.

Another one from the seemingly endless sireline of 2016 Golden Slipper winner Capitalist, Oakfield Mahogany returns to racing in a Class 1 Hcp over 1100m on a slowly improving soft track.

It was four days before Christmas when the Damien Lane stable at Wyong unveiled the gelding after two lead-up trial wins, and he duly saluted from off the speed, filling punters’ pockets after being back from $4.80 into $3.60.

Reportedly much stronger this time in, Oakfield Mahogany tuned up for his return with a smart trial win and is out to lay the platform for a prep that can quickly thrust him into metropolitan company.

He’s one of several lightly raced gallopers starting a new prep in the Upper Hunter.

Earlier, well-regarded four-year-old Fiendish resumes for a second prep in a Maiden Plate (1100m) for the leading local Paul Messara stable.

Having gone within a whisker a few times in four placed runs last year, Fiendish has also trialled well, with the stable making several gear changes including the removal of blinkers.

Messara also has Snitzel three-year-old The Hungarian resuming off a seven week break via a trial win in a very competitive Maiden Hcp over 1400m.

The city stables, though, are also getting in on the fresh action.

Rosehill-based three-year-old Portnoy shapes as a serious first-up rival to The Hungarian in that maiden battle, but they will probably all be playing second fiddle in the breeding stakes to a debutant in the same race.

Typical of the Annabel Neasham stable at Warwick farm searching far and wide for European-bred prospects, the stable introduces another supremely bred three-year-old.

Spiral Architect is by Irish Group 1-winning sprinter Dark Angel, and out of a British mare by late great German stallion and triple Group 1 winner Monsun.
