Channel 10 under pressure to deliver on Melbourne Cup coverage

The Melbourne Cup looks a little different in 2020.

Instead of thousands of eager spectators flocking to Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse, the race that stops a nation will run this year without spectators.

The Cup is being shown on Channel 10, after the broadcaster won the rights to the Melbourne Cup Carnival for 2020.

Channel 10 is under pressure to deliver the goods this year, after critics savaged its first year of hosting the Cup, calling it “awful”.

Channel 10’s coverage of the Melbourne Cup kicked off at 10am with hosts Gorgi Coghlan and Stephen Quartermain manning the desk for Channel 10.

Channel 10 will cover every race including the main event at 3pm.

Coming up they’ll be joined by other Channel 10 stars including MasterChef judge Melissa Leong and The Masked Singer host and comedian Dave Hughes.

There’s also flamingo, crocodile and sheep racing, according to the hosts — stay tuned for whatever that might mean.

The network earlier announced hosting duties would go to Coghlan, panellist and sometimes host of The Project — a decision that was criticised by sports presenter Tim Gossage.

Gossage said the decision was a wasted opportunity, when the network could have chosen Caty Price.

“How good is Caty Price,” Gossage said in a tweet. “Knows her stuff and lets the expert talk … why she isn’t hosting the race day coverage is befuddling. (She’s) refreshing and knowledgeable.”

Coghlan is sharing hosting duties with Quartermain.

The broadcast runs from 10am to 5.30pm, after the last race is run.
