Reece James was a rare bright spark for England in their 1-0 defeat against Denmark at Wembley on Wednesday night.
However, the Chelsea defender’s full Three Lions debut ended on a sour note when he was sent off after the full-time whistle.
Referee Jesus Gil Manzano made a number of contentious calls in the match, none more so than his decision to award Denmark a penalty when Kyle Walker brushed Thomas Delaney inside the box.
Christian Eriksen scored the resulting penalty, which eventually proved to be the winner for the visitors.
Harry Maguire was also sent off early on for England, although the Manchester United defender can have no complaints after being shown two deserved yellow cards.
He was not the only Three Lions star to see red, nevertheless, as James was dismissed in unusual fashion after the full-time whistle for what UEFA have confirmed was “foul and abusive language”.
The Blues right-back has become the first ever player to be sent off on his full England debut, which was an unfortunate end to an otherwise solid night’s work.
Harry Maguire is known as 'Slab Head' and he really looks like he has concrete for brains
James whipped in a number of inviting crosses over on the right-hand side, yet the likes of Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford were unable to get on the end of them.
The hosts were not at their best on what proved a disappointing outing in the Nations League, but former Premier League striker Chris Sutton believes Maguire’s sending off was the turning point.
Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live: “England were in a goal glute last year, but against sides that aren't at the level of this Danish side which is extremely streetwise.
“While it is a massive disappointment, no doubt about it, the reason they lost the game was because Harry Maguire had a couple of mad moments.

“Gareth Southgate will be there to be shot at because he's been in poor form this season, but I understand both sides of it.”
He then added: “England were playing pretty well until Harry Maguire got sent off and then it compounded by a ridiculous penalty award, in my view. Then it's perfect for Denmark, they are not the most attacking side, they are extremely patient.”
