Sam Kerr will not be short of support when she attempts to help send the Matildas to their first ever Women’s World Cup final on Wednesday, and you can be sure her partner Kristie Mewis will be shouting loudest at Stadium Australia.
Kerr and Mewis are the undisputed power couple of women’s football, with the pair amassing thousands of followers as their relationship has blossomed.
Fans of the Matildas are very familiar with Kerr’s rise from Western Australia to the top of the women’s game, but who is Kristie Mewis? Daily Mail Australia provides all the details here.
Mewis grew up in Hanson, Massachusetts, where she discovered her footballing talent from a young age. A hard-working midfielder, Mewis was far too good at high school level and scored 74 goals during her time on Whitman-Hanson Regional High School’s team.
Her ability was quickly recognised and Mewis played alongside her younger sister Sam at the U-17 and U-20 Women’s World Cups in 2008 and 2010 respectively.

Mewis went onto enjoy a superb three-year spell at Boston College, before heading to Australia in 2013 to sign her first professional contract, with W-League side Canberra United FC.
However, her stint in Australia did not last long at all. Mewis departed after two games, scoring two goals, as she was drafted to FC Kansas City in the inaugural season of the National Women’s Soccer League.
Barring brief stints in Japan and Germany, Mewis has spent the rest of her career in the States, where she has played for Boston Breakers, Washington Spirit, Chicago Red Stars, Houston Dash and Gotham FC.
Away from the field, Mewis is openly gay and dated England star Rachel Daly prior to her relationship with Kerr.
Mewis and Daly’s story began as teammates on the Dash. Their friendship flourished into a romantic partnership in November 2017, adding a layer of intrigue to their on-pitch chemistry.
After two years together, Mewis and Daly decided to part ways, keeping the reasons behind their separation private. Despite this, they continued to be teammates until 2021.
Mewis embarked on a new chapter with Gotham FC, while Daly made her way back to England, joining Aston Villa.

The American found love again after meeting Chelsea superstar Kerr while playing for competing clubs in the US league in 2019.
They spoke online for almost four months during the 2020 Covid lockdown before spending two weeks in quarantine together, where they quickly fell in love.
The pair continued their romance in the lead-up to the Olympics in 2021 where – following America’s defeat of Australia in the semi-finals – they were photographed together.
Their on-pitch embrace made headlines as Kerr’s break-up from her former longtime partner – another US club player Nikki Stanton – had not yet become public.
After almost two years into their high-profile love story, Kerr and Mewis have emerged as one of football’s power couples and made the decision to be ‘out and proud’ in both the queer and straight communities.
Their cross-global romance has also been heavily documented on social media with both women amassing hundreds of thousands of followers.
‘We’re not private people. I like sharing my story. I like sharing who I am outside of football. Football is 5 per cent of my life,’ Kerr told UK publication, Gaffer, earlier this year.
‘We set little milestones and we make time during the week where we’ll watch the same show and FaceTime or have dinner together or something. But it’s tough.

‘I think the thing that keeps us going is that we can see an end point. We both just want each other to do so well in our careers. I don’t think you could be in a long-distance relationship with someone who didn’t get the sport.’
Mewis said it was special for the pair to be role models for gay women who don’t come out for fear of homophobic abuse or rejection by society.
‘I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me. I love to share my relationship on social media,’ the USA star said.
Kerr revealed her biggest concern since entering into her relationship with Mewis.
‘What I worry about most out of anything is that our coaches or teammates don’t think that we can separate the two. I hope people know that when it’s training time or play time, it doesn’t come into it,’ Kerr said.
‘I remember one time in Newcastle (Australia) she came on, we were playing against each other, and we went in on each other. We’d kill each other. But I worry that people think that we’re not serious about our careers.’
‘We did play a match against each other but I thought her team was crazy. When I play I’m such a s**t stirrer and she (Mewis) was getting so angry,’ Kerr said.
