When Edouard Mendy could make Chelsea debut with £22m transfer close

Edouard Mendy is set to be available for Chelsea’s game against West Brom on Saturday with Frank Lampard confirming the goalkeeper was having a medical.

Mendy has been linked with a move from Rennes to Stamford Bridge for a number of weeks, and he is expected to replace Kepa Arrizabalaga in the Blues goal.

Kepa has struggled since his world-record transfer to Chelsea in 2018 and made another howler as Liverpool beat their Premier League rivals on Sunday.

Mendy is set to sign a five-year contract with Chelsea and couple play as early as this weekend with the Blues travelling to West Brom.

Lampard said: "I think competition is a regular thing at a club like Chelsea.

"The goalkeeper situation isn’t always as clear cut as that… Kepa himself wants to improve his own performances.

"It’s in everyone’s hands to push and develop to try and get in the team. I am not making any final statements at all in this minute.

"It is the hardest position because of the individual nature of it and mistakes get punished with goals.

"I understand that and as a manager I have to be sympathetic to that point. I am very aware of that.

"As far as I'm aware, as long as [Mendy] passes his test with us on Thursday and if that is negative then he should be OK to play."

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville believes it’s the right decision to replace Kepa.

He said: "If you don't have your goalkeeper right you are going to massively struggle to get where you need to get to. You certainly will never win a league.

"You will not win a league with a goalkeeper who is letting goals in from outside his box, doesn't dominate his area and concedes goals from set-pieces. It isn't going to happen.

"It's a stark warning. Frank Lampard knows this. He's played in championship-winning teams, he knows what he needs to do, he doesn't like the goalkeeper, he wants him out and he's going to bring a new one in because he knows Frank Lampard will be sacked as a manager if he doesn't win the league in the next two or three years.”
