Van Persie shows where his loyalties lie in list of six best he’s played with

Robin van Persie has shown he holds his Arsenal and Manchester United loyalties dear in a list of the six best footballers he's played with.

With just a year left on his contract, the Dutch legend sealed a controversial switch to the Gunners' Premier League rivals in 2012.

Van Persie's transfer was justified as his 30 goals the following season almost single handedly returned the Premier League title to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman eventually left United after three seasons, moving to Fenerbahce before retiring at boyhood club Feyenoord in 2019.

That same year Van Persie was asked for the most talented team-mate he's played with and instead named six.

He told BBC Sport : "So difficult to name one.

"I would go for Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Wayne Rooney and Ruud van Nistelrooy."

Van Persie named four United legends on his list and two Arsenal gods.

Given the wealth of talent he's played with for the Netherlands – including Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben – Van Persie stayed true to his English club loyalties. United, of course, taking the bragging rights.

And despite Louis van Gaal deeming the Dutch striker surplus to requirements at United, Van Persie still pinches himself that he played for the club.

"Because I had one more year on my deal, maybe I should have stayed," he said.

"But then Van Gaal was the coach and he made it quite clear what his intentions were.

"Then you have to make a decision: Do you stay and fight for your place?

"Would it be an honest competition or not? Based on all that info, we decided to move on.

"But three years is not three days, it's still a long period, it's still a big part of my football career, and in total 11 years of football in England… as a kid I would never have dreamed of that."
