United 'could offer Chelsea Harry Maguire as part of Mason Mount deal'

Man United ‘could offer captain Harry Maguire to Chelsea as part of a player-plus-cash deal to bring Mason Mount to Old Trafford’, with the clubs still £30MILLION apart in their valuations of the England midfielder

  •  Mason Mount is understood to be keen on a move to Man United this window
  •  Chelsea and the Red Devils remain £30million apart in their valuations of Mount
  • EXCLUSIVE: United are set to pay Maguire £10m to leave the club this summer

Harry Maguire could act as a makeweight in a move for Mason Mount to join Manchester United from Chelsea, according to reports.

The Man United captain has slid down the pecking order in recent seasons, and is now considered fourth choice centre back behind Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez.

As such, the Red Devils are set to pay the defender around £10million to leave the club this summer, as revealed by Mail Sport, with the out-of-favour player still under contract for another two years.

Now, reports from The Sun have suggested that he could form part of a player-plus-cash deal to bring Mount to Old Trafford.

Mount has yet to agree to a new contract at Chelsea, despite numerous offers from the Blues, and with his deal up in 2024 is likely to depart this summer.

The England midfielder has drawn huge interest from across the Premier League’s top clubs, with United and Liverpool thought to be favourites to land his signature for next term.

But the Red Devils appear to be the most ready to act on their interest, and they will now step up their pursuit of the player after Saturday’s FA Cup final clash with Manchester City.

In fact, manager Erik ten Hag has identified Mount as one of his priority transfer targets, and the club’s chiefs are eager to get their business done early in the window, following the uncertainties of last term.

However, there is still the small matter of the fee require to bring Mount to United.

Chelsea are standing firm on their valuation of the player, considering him to be worth around £85m, despite there being just 12 months remaining on his deal in west London.

United, on the other hand, see his value as closer to £55m, leaving the two parties some £30m apart.

This is where Maguire comes into play, considering the Red Devils reportedly value him at around £30m – the required difference in valuations stopping a deal from progressing for Mount.

Whether or not the Blues are interested in bringing Maguire to Stamford Bridge is another matter.

They are currently set to undergo a mass clear out of their bloated squad, with central defenders Trevoh Chalobah and Kalidou Koulibaly, as well as Cesar Azpilicueta, believed to be among those expected to depart.

However, Pochettino did attempt to sign Maguire previously, when the player was still at Hull, only for Leicester to offer a more lucrative proposal than Daniel Levy’s Tottenham.

Perhaps crucially, an agreement over personal terms for Mount is unlikely to be an issue with the England international known to be fully open to a move to Old Trafford.

Pochettino, though, is hoping to keep hold of the academy graduate, having been an admirer of his talents with both Tottenham and subsequently Paris Saint-Germain, and wants him to sign a new contract.
