Jamie Carragher feels Tottenham need to cut ties with Antonio Conte immediately following the Italian’s furious rant after his side dropped two valuable points against Southampton on Saturday. Conte’s post-match press conference proved to be one for the history books as he went on a remarkable rant about the attitude of his players and their lack of motivation.

It’s not the first time Conte has used his press conferences to take aim at his players, but his latest comments have caused a stir on social media with some fans speculating over his future at the club. Conte is yet to commit to a new deal at Tottenham past this season and former Liverpool star Carragher believes the Italian coach is trying to force Spurs’ hand.

“Conte wants to be sacked in this international break,” Carragher tweeted. “Spurs should just put him out of his misery and do it tonight.”

Tottenham had a great chance to further enhance their chances of finishing inside the top four against relegation-threatened Southampton. Goals from Pedro Porro, Harry Kane and Ivan Perisic had given Tottenham a 3-1 lead, but they failed to see out the win.

Theo Walcott soon brought Southampton back to within one before Pape Matar Sarr gave away a costly penalty deep into stoppage time. James Ward-Prowse duly struck past Fraser Forster to help Southampton steal a valuable point.

Conte cut a furious figure after the match and gave one of the most intense press conferences of all time where he berated his players for being “selfish”.

He fumed: “They are used to it here. They don’t play for something important. They don’t want to play under pressure. They don’t want to play under stress. It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this.

“I said I wanted to see the fire and I have not seen it. I said that I want to see the fire in their eyes, in their hearts. I want to see the right spirit. Not only in the training session, but on the pitch because it is here you make the difference.

“Until now, I try to hide the situation but there are 10 games to go and some people think we can fight. Fight for what? With this spirit, this attitude, this commitment? What? For seventh, eighth, 10th place?

“I am not used to this position. I’m really upset and everyone has to take their responsibility.

“Not only the club, the manager and the staff. The players have to be involved in this situation because it is time to change this situation if Tottenham want to change.

“If they want to continue in this way, they can change the manager, a lot of managers, but the situation cannot change. Believe me.”
