Tottenham close to first summer signing as Gollini ‘undergoes medical’

Tottenham are finally edging closer to making their first signing of the summer transfer window, more than a month after business began.

Spurs’ preparations were hampered by their drawn-out search for a new manager, which finally ended after 72 days with the appointment of Nuno Espirito Santo.

The Premier League side are in dire need of an overhaul, having finished seventh in the top-flight last term and with Harry Kane demanding a summer exit in search of silverware.

Three weeks into Nuno’s reign as Tottenham boss, managing director of football Fabio Paratici is set to finally get that overhaul underway.

It looks likely to start with the signing of Atalanta keeper Pierluigi Gollini, with Gianluluca di Marzio reporting the move is “nearing completion”.

Gollini’s move is said to be a one-year loan deal which also contains an obligation for Spurs to buy him for £13million if he makes at least 20 appearances in all competitions.

The Italian has already started undertaking his medical ahead of the move, which is set to conclude at some point this morning.

He will then fly out to London to put the finishing touches on the deal, which will be his third spell in England.

Gollini spent part of his youth career at Manchester United, before having a one-year spell at Aston Villa in the Championship, where he conceded 17 goals in 20 appearances.

But it is at Atalanta where he has starred, keeping 10 clean sheets last season as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side finished third in Serie A.

A cruciate ligament injury had limited his playing last term, with Marco Sportiello also at times overtaking him in the pecking order.

But despite being a key part of Gasperini’s side for some time, Gollini is now set to join Spurs, where he will battle with Hugo Lloris for the number one shirt.

Lloris has come under fire in recent seasons for a lack of form and it will be hoped that Gollini can mount a strong challenge to his starting place in goal.
