Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu Mensah is discussing a £1.8million transfer to Bayer Leverkusen.

The 23-year-old’s deal runs out this summer and he had decided against signing a new contract as the finances offered were understood to be a lot less than he was asking.

Fosu Mensah has made 30 appearances for United since joining from Ajax’s academy in 2014. He had spells on loan at Crystal Palace and Fulham but has failed to make the desired impact at United.

Rather than risk losing him for training compensation at the end of the season, United have opted to push through a sale now.

Leverkusen, who have also posted interest in Manchester City winger Jayden Braaf who shares the same agent, have advanced with talks while there has also been interest from Hertha Berlin, Marseille and his previous club Ajax.

However, Bayer Leverkusen are also interested in Manchester City winger Jayden Braaf

United would still like to strengthen their defence with cover at right-back and a starting centre-back though the latter is likely to be in the summer.

Fosu Mensah’s departure would also underline Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s belief that Brandon Williams should stay rather than go out on loan this month.

Meanwhile, United are not pursuing a move for Lille midfielder Boubakary Soumare.

The 21-year-old France U21 international has been watched by United for some time and has been linked with a move to Old Trafford in this window with Lille looking to boost their finances with a sale.

However, United will not be making an offer for the athletic box to box Soumare as they have other priorities. Newcastle United have a long-held interest in Soumare.

Ecuador midfielder Moises Caicedo, who has also been scouted by both United and Newcastle, is poised to join Brighton from Independiente del Valle later today.
