Three Man Utd defenders free to leave amid Dayot Upamecano transfer chase

Manchester United centre-halves Chris Smalling, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo are all available in the transfer market.

The Red Devils are open to offers for the trio as they continue to hunt Dayot Upamecano.

RB Leipzig’s star defender, 21, would likely slot straight into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s backline at Old Trafford.

Frenchman Upamecano would be a top partner for Harry Maguire, while Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly offer solid support too.

United have far too many central defenders on their books, though.

And Solskjaer is hoping to offload some before the window shuts on October 5, according to the Manchester Evening News .

Smalling spent last season on loan at Roma and is keen to make that switch permanent ahead of the 2020/21 Serie A campaign getting underway.

Jones and Rojo, meanwhile, have really struggled for game time under Solskjaer and are surplus to requirements.

28-year-old defender Jones, though, still has three years left to run on a contract he penned as recently as February 2019.

Argentinian Rojo, meanwhile, only has a deal until 2021, with the option for an extra year for the 30-year-old.

Upamecano would certainly be an upgrade at the back for United, although they may now have to wait until next year to potentially land him.

He signed a new contract with Bundesliga side and Champions League semi-finalists Leipzig earlier in the summer.

But a release clause in his deal will come into affect in 2021, meaning he can be snapped up for as little as £38m.

Upamecano made his senior France debut last week and his potential is massive, so it is no surprise United will face competition for his signature from other big clubs around Europe.
