Thomas Partey to Arsenal: Atletico make call, new Gunners problem, player’s exit stance

Thomas Partey to Arsenal is showing no signs of slowing down. The Ghana international is Mikel Arteta’s top transfer target and speculation is sure to rumble on. Express Sport will now bring you the latest news and gossip about the Atletico Madrid star.

Atletico make call

Atletico Madrid have decided they want to sign Espanyol ace Marc Roca as a replacement for Partey, reports say.

Diego Simeone’s side are planning for the worst-case scenario in case the Ghana international departs for the Emirates Stadium.

And, in order to afford Roca, Marca say Atletico will have to let Partey go to free up transfer funds.

Partey’s current deal expires in the summer of 2023 and, though he wants a pay rise, he’s open to a new challenge elsewhere.

The 27-year-old made 46 appearances for Atletico last season and is keen on a switch to the Premier League.

New Gunners problem

Though Arsenal want to sign Partey, they’re not the only club interested in the Atletico star.

Spanish website OkDiario report that Juventus have joined the running to sign the midfielder, with Andrea Pirlo a huge admirer.

Pirlo is determined to steer Juve to the Champions League crown and would relish the chance to bring Partey to Turin.

However, while that’s the case, the Old Lady have financial struggles of their own.

And, should they sign Luis Suarez from Barcelona as expected, then it will further complicate matters for the Old Lady.

Player’s exit stance

Partey is keen on a move to England, as mentioned above.

But Marca say the Ghana international won’t force a move away from Atletico out of respect for his current side.

That means that Atletico are under no obligation to let their prized asset go on the cheap.

And that, therefore, suggests Arsenal would have to pay the entirety of Partey’s £45million release clause to bring him to north London.

Parlour suggests Lacazette as Partey bait

Arsenal legend Ray Parlour recently opened up on Partey.

And he urged the club to sell Alexandre Lacazette to raise funds for the 27-year-old, telling talkSPORT: “Lacazette will be the one, the asset.

“You look at the assets they’ve got, there isn’t many really.

“They’ve got Aubameyang, but with him you’re not going to get as much as you’d like because, currently, he’s only got a year left on his contract.

“Probably the asset will be Lacazette. I know Juventus were interested in maybe buying him. Sometimes you have to lose a player to bring players in. You do need to freshen up the dressing room.”
