Former Barcelona star Thierry Henry believes a significant weakness will prevent Paris Saint-Germain from dominating Europe, despite Lionel Messi’s recent arrival. Messi joined PSG on a two-year deal after leaving Camp Nou as a free agent, bolstering the French giants’ hopes of finally lifting the Champions League.

Mauricio Pochettino is building an all-star squad at the Parc des Princes, completing five blockbuster deals this summer.

Messi is PSG’s fifth marquee signing of the summer, joining fellow free arrivals Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Achraf Hakimi has also joined from Inter Milan in a deal worth up to £60m as Pochettino looks to guide the club to domestic and European success.

Speaking on Dimanche Soir Foot on Amazon Prime, though, Henry claimed that PSG will struggle to succeed despite acquiring Messi because they concede too many goals.

He said: “Balance is the most important. At one point, we always talk about great players, attacking, going forward, but we need a balance.

“We are talking about the team in which I played at Barca, but people forget to point out that we weren’t conceding a lot of goals.

“In general, teams that don’t concede a lot of goals are not far from the title or even from the Champions League.

“When you have superhuman players, it gets a little easier, but when I see how Paris is evolving at the moment, they concede too many goals for my taste to be able to go a little further.

“It is true that there was a lack of players, but the balance is the most important.”

While PSG’s defence has let the club down when it matters most in recent years, Pochettino has potentially fixed that this summer.

In Donnarumma, Hakimi and Ramos, PSG have acquired three top-class defensive players who will undoubtedly raise the bar at the back.

A back four consisting of Hakimi, Ramos, Marquinhos and Juan Bernat looks as formidable as defences come.

Ramos is a particularly notable signing, given his wealth of experience as the face of Europe’s most decorated club, Real Madrid.

His winning pedigree and overall quality should shine through at the foot of Pochettino’s team, alongside a world-class player in his own right in Marquinhos.

It’s certainly an exciting season to be affiliated with PSG, a club with the potential to win it all.
