Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has refused to rule out a sensational swoop for Erling Haaland this summer.
Haaland has become one of the hottest properties in world football after plundering 27 goals in 25 appearances for Borussia Dortmund this season.
The Norwegian international has a £70m release clause in his contract that will be activated in June 2022.
Borussia Dortmund could will be willing to sell him in the next transfer window provided the price is right – and are expected to demand up to £150m for the 20-year-old hitman.
Manchester City have targeted Haaland as the man Pep Guardiola wants to replace record scorer Sergio Aguero, who is expected to leave the Etihad this summer when his current deal expires.
But Solskjaer has dropped the biggest hint yet that Manchester United will join their bitter rivals in what could be an explosive scrap for Erling's services.
United spent months pursuing fellow Dortmund ace Jadon Sancho last season but failed to negotiate a deal with the Bundesliga outfit.
But this is not expected to stop them from going back to the German outfit in an attempt to lure Haaland to Old Trafford.
Solskjaer, whose side host Real Sociedad in the last 32 of the Europa League tomorrow night, admits he has kept in touch with Haaland and that any manager in the world would want him in his side.
He said: "You follow them of course and I keep in touch with Erling – and it's great to see him become the player he has become.
"I know he'll work to improve all the time. He's a Dortmund player and we just wish him well there and let's see what life will bring later on.
"You know I can't speak about Erling, because he's at Dortmund, and I think it's disrespectful to talk too much about it apart from that I know him and I speak to him.
"Who wasn't interested in him a year ago? Everybody would say you would take the best players in the world and Erling is a top player.

"For me, the recruitment we have done, we have done well. Dan (James) and Bruno (Fernandes) show that the signings we have made since I came to the club have all contributed and added to the squad – and that is part of what we have to do.
"We have to complement what we have in our group with other different types of players and also young players. I'm happy with our recruitment model and the processes that we go through."
