Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly rang Joel Glazer last summer to argue that the Red Devils should hijack Manchester City’s attempts to sign Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal forward ultimately ended up returning to Old Trafford for a second spell after he had been tipped to join their neighbours across town.
Ferguson retired as United boss in 2013 after nearly 27 years at the helm but has remained highly influential at Old Trafford.
And, according to The Athletic, he intervened with Ronaldo’s prospective move to the Citizens as he called the United chairman and encouraged him to make a move for the blockbuster star.
Ferguson apparently rarely rings Glazer but found it inconceivable that Ronaldo could sign for City after his endeavours with United during the early part of his career.
The conversation unequivocally had an impact on Glazer and the Red Devils soon made their move for the player.
United ended up paying just £12.8m for the 36-year-old and he left Juventus to return to the Premier League.

It hasn’t quite been the dream reunion club and player were expecting, however, with United enduring a dismal run of form in the autumn with Ronaldo leading the line.
The 13-time Premier League champions started the season emphatically but went on a run of one win in eight games as former boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was given his marching orders.
United fell away from the title race during that period, with Ralf Rangnick being appointed as interim boss until the end of the season.
But it hasn’t all been bad news for Ronaldo since his return to the north west club.

The superstar has illustrated that he still possesses match-winning credentials and has notched crucial goals this season.
He scored in all five of his side’s Champions League group stage matches he appeared in and scored late winners against Villarreal and Atalanta.
He also scored a brace in the 2-2 draw with Atalanta when United faced the Italians for a second time.
Ronaldo has also struck eight times in 15 Premier League games this season.
He scored a brace on his second Red Devils debut against Newcastle in September and found the back of the net twice in a 3-2 victory over Arsenal last month.
And the forward will be key to his team’s top-four hopes this season.
United are currently sixth in the Premier League table and are four points behind fourth-placed Arsenal.
But the side will have two games in hand on the Gunners by Saturday tea time and they could climb above their rivals over the coming weeks if they can put together a strong run of form.
