Sarri, Mazzarri and ex-boss Montella 'could take over Serie A side'

Maurizio Sarri and Walter Mazzarri ‘in the frame to take over from Beppe Iachini’ after Fiorentina’s poor start to the season – but club ‘could appoint Vincenzo Montella for a THIRD time’

  • Maurizio Sarri has been out of work since being dismissed by Juventus in July
  • Walter Mazzarri last worked in February after two years managing Torino
  • Vincenzo Montella managed Fiorentina between 2012 and 2015 and also in 2019

Fiorentina are set to sack Beppe Iachini, with Maurizio Sarri, Walter Mazzarri and former boss Vincenzo Montella reportedly in the frame to take over.

La Viola are currently sitting 11th in Serie A after finishing 10th last season.

Iachini emerged with some credit last season after taking over from Montella – who had been appointed by the club in April last year for the second time – in December last year with the side languishing in 14th before guiding them to a top-half finish.

Maurizio Sarri is one of the managers who is apparently in the frame to take over from Iachini

However, the former Palermo and Sampdoria manager suffered the loss of last season’s star attacking player Federico Chiesa to Juventus over the summer on a two-year loan deal and Iachini’s men have started off the season in disappointing fashion.

The second match of the campaign saw them squander a 3-2 lead against Inter Milan, with Romelu Lukaku and Danilo D’Ambrosio turning the game on its head at the death.

They then lost at home to Claudio Ranieri’s Sampdoria before letting a two-goal lead slip at newly promoted Spezia.

Fiorentina hung on to beat Udinese 3-2 in their most recent home game, before losing 2-0 to Roma on Sunday, recording just one shot on target and ending the game with 10 men after a wild challenge by Lucas Martinez Quarta on Edin Dzeko.

Ahead of their trip to Parma, La Nazione that Iachini is on borrowed time and there are several high-profile names being suggested as his possible replacement.

Sarri led Juventus to their ninth successive last season but was sacked after the Old Lady were knocked out of the Champions League at the round-of-16 stage by Lyon.

A notable point in the former Chelsea manager’s favour is that lives near Florence and he will also have the chance to link up with Jose Callejon again.

Vincenzo Montella could be in line for a sensational return to the Fiorentina hotseat

The Spaniard thrived during his three years at Napoli under Sarri between 2015 and 2018, scoring 42 goals and assisting 35 others in 146 games.

Mazzarri enjoyed two years at Torino after a one-year spell at Watford, guiding Il Toro to a ninth-placed finish in 2017-18, with Andrea Belotti’s goals catapulting the side to 7th and a Europa League qualifying place, where they were eliminated at the play-off stage by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Mazzarri was sacked in February this year after a 4-0 defeat to eventually relegated Lecce left them 12th, which came shortly after a 7-0 loss to free-scoring Atalanta. Torino eventually ended the season 16th.

The 2-0 defeat to Roma was the latest in a disappointing campaign so far for Iachini’s side

Montella is the last big name in the frame. While it seems improbable that he’d take over the reins at the Stadio Artemio Franchi for the third time – and less than 12 months after his last sacking – stranger things have happened.

Davide Ballardini, who was sacked by Genoa in 2018 during his third spell in charge of the club, had also Cagliari three times.

If Montella is taken on, don’t be surprised.
