Roy Keane hails England for 'making it look easy' by thrashing Hungary

Roy Keane lavishes praise on England for ‘making it look easy’ in thrashing of Hungary and says Gareth Southgate’s men showed ‘great attitude’ to bounce back from Euro 2020 final loss… but claims hosts ‘didn’t have a plan B’

  • Roy Keane was full of praise for England as they thumped Hungary 4-0
  • Raheem Sterling led the way with Harry Kane and Declan Rice also on target
  • The fiery pundit said England showed the right attitude and made it look easy
  • He criticised Hungary for failing to have a back up plan after going behind

England’s confident thrashing of Hungary on Thursday night earned top plaudits from Roy Keane – who feels the Three Lions ‘made it look easy’ as they cruised to victory in their World Cup qualifier.

Gareth Southgate’s men secured their fourth successive win on the road to Qatar 2022 thanks to goals from Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane, Harry Maguire and Declan Rice, and pundit Keane was impressed by the collective attitude of the team.

England were playing their first match since their agonising Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy in July and the squad had a huge opportunity to show how they had handled the aftermath and map out their intentions for the next major tournament.

England’s 4-0 thrashing of Hungary had pundit Roy Keane raving as he hailed their attitude

The Manchester United legend said Gareth Southgate’s men made it look easy in Budapest

They did exactly that as they overcame a drab first 45 minutes to step things up after the interval and punish the sloppy hosts – who allowed them through on goal time after time.

Speaking to ITV Sport after the game, Keane said England deserve ‘credit’ for upping the ante against Hungary after initially finding it tough against the stubborn hosts.

‘I have to give the credit to England,’ he said.

‘The way Hungary play, when the game is tight their energy levels are up… but as soon as the first goal went in they didn’t have a plan B. Credit to England for that. England made it look so easy because they did everything right.’

Keane was impressed with how England kept their energy levels up throughout the game

England were playing their first game since losing the Euro 2020 final and did not disappoint

The Manchester United legend – known for lashing out at teams and slating various players on Sky Sports – had nothing bad to say about England after a confident display and said it was their attitude that saw them prevail.

‘They had a great attitude, they did the basics well, they sped things up and they ran in behind,’ he added.

‘We’ve seen other teams like Portugal get out of jail on Wednesday night, Italy have drawn, and Spain have been beaten so it’s very early in the season.

‘It’s a chance for these teams and if you turn up with the wrong attitude you are in trouble. But England didn’t so credit to them for that.’

England will next turn their attentions to another World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley Stadium on Sunday before travelling to Poland on September 8.
