Rooney admits his concern over Liverpool signing "one of the best midfielders"

Wayne Rooney says Thiago Alcantara is one of the best midfielders around – and he's praying he doesn't sign for Liverpool.

The Reds have been strongly linked with a move for Thiago all summer but are yet to agree on a price with Bayern Munich.

The Bundesliga club are holding out for a fee of around £30million, but Liverpool have felt the full effects of the coronavirus pandemic and only want to pay £20m.

Thiago is keen for the transfer to take place, but currently has his mind on the Champions League final, which Bayern Munich will contest on Sunday night.

According to Manchester United legend Rooney, the Red Devils were keen on signing Thiago once upon a time, but opted against doing so.

Rooney rates the midfielder very highly, and is hoping Liverpool miss out on bringing him in this summer as he has the ability to strengthen an already world-class Reds side.

"He almost came to United in 2013 and now Liverpool are linked with him," Rooney wrote in The Sunday Times.

"He's one of the best midfielders around – I just hope he doesn't go there!

"He can take the ball, be composed on it, keep things ticking over – and he'll put his foot in. He's an all-round midfielder, really, with a bit of everything.

"He backs up that Bayern press and he drops in between the centre halves to take the ball yet can also join in when they're playing around the other box too.

"He's a great player. It would be great to see him in the Premier League, actually."
