Richarlison left the pitch in tears after he appeared to suffer an injury during Tottenham’s game against Southampton on Saturday.

The Spurs forward departed the field just five minutes into the game shaking hands with Antonio Conte before walking straight down the tunnel.

It was a bizarre start to the match at St Mary’s as Richarlison wasn’t the only player to leave the field with an injury in the opening term.

Ben Davies also pulled up with what appeared to be a hamstring injury, while Saints duo Armel Bella-Kotchap and Jan Bednarek also left the field with injuries.

Richarlison had looked uncomfortable during the warm up, adding further despair to an injury-stricken season that the 25-year-old had described as ‘s***’ after Spurs crashed out of the Champions League following a defeat to AC Milan.

Having joined from Everton in the summer for £60m at the start of the season, the Brazilian has struggled to become a regular face in Conte’s starting eleven, notably clashing with the manager last week, with the Italian agreeing that Richarlison’s season has been ‘s***’ too.

But it’s not the first time this season that the former Everton forward has hobbled off the field, leaving the pitch with a calf injury in Spurs’ 2-0 win against Everton back in October, casting doubts over whether he would be fit for Brazil at the World Cup.

He recovered in time to play in four of Brazil’s five matches at the tournament, scoring three times in Qatar, but suffered a hamstring injury during their quarter-final defeat by Croatia which ruled him out of action for three league games.

He has since returned to make eight league appearances for the London club, but has failed to find the back of the net, despite proving to be a pivotal figure in Tottenham’s 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest last week, earning the London side a penalty while teeing up Son Heung-min for Tottenham’s third.

But things have gone from bad to worse for the Spurs forward, who looked uncomfortable during the warm up, before his injury became apparent during the match.

Sitting on the turf in dismay, Richarlison was consoled by his captain Harry Kane before he walked down the tunnel.

He was replaced by Dejan Kulusevski, as Ivan Perisic came on to replace Ben Davies.

While it remains unclear as to the nature of the injury, it seems the forward will now join a growing list of players in the Tottenham medical rooms, which includes Hugo Loris, Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Ryan Sessegnon.

Antonio Conte consoled Richarlison after he left the pitch, but had previously said the Brazilian was ‘selfish’ in response to his inflammatory comments demanding more game time.

‘He is right’, the Italian said in response to Richarlison’s claims that this season has been ‘s***’.

‘He started well with us, he then had an injury and went to the World Cup and had another serious injury.

‘He’s scored zero goals with us [in the Premier League], only two goals in the Champions League and the guy was really honest to say his season was not good.

‘His season has not finished yet. If he deserves to play I’ll give him the opportunity.’

Tottenham went a goal up in the first half with Pedro Porro netting his first goal for the London side, but it was cancelled out in the second half by Che Adams.
