Ralf Rangnick discussed the possibility of signing Erling Haaland during his Manchester United interview prior to his appointment.
The German was confirmed as the club's interim manager at the end of November in deal that will see him take charge of the Red Devils for the remainder of the season.
Rangnick will then take up a consultancy role at the club having impressed United's hierarchy during the interview process.
During those discussions, the 63-year-old reportedly highlighted his desire to address United's midfield but it has now emerged that the centre of the park wasn't the only area of the pitch where Rangnick was eyeing up reinforcements.
According to The Athletic, centre-forward targets were also mooted, with Rangnick identifying Borussia Dortmund hitman Haaland as his favoured option in attack.
The Norwegian, who has netted a staggering 76 goals in 74 appearances since making the move to Germany, was discussed during the interview, but United will face stiff competition as a whole host of Europe's top clubs battle it out for his signature next summer.
While the Manchester club may have failed in their two previous attempts to secure the 21-year-old's services, the Red Devils will no doubt be boosted by the fact that Rangnick is a man who has already achieved that feat.

The German was involved in Haaland's move to Austrian side RB Salzburg from his native Molde in January 2019 and additionally holds close ties with Erling's father and agent Alfe-Inge Haaland.
Though it has emerged Rangnick is keen to recruit Haaland as the spearhead of United's attack, he was quick to dismiss suggestions he would make a move for the in-demand Dortmund striker shortly after his appointment.
Amid speculation claiming he would receive a hefty financial bonus from United's chiefs should he seal a deal for the highly sought-after striker, Rangnick joked with journalists and dismissed such claims as "nonsense".
"Let me have a look; £10 million for Erling Haaland, £10m for Kylian Mbappe, £10m for Robert Lewandowski, £10m for Joshua Kimmich," Rangnick responded playfully earlier this month. "This is nonsense obviously, there are no such clauses in my contract.
"It doesn't make sense. I'm more than happy [with the squad]. The offensive strike power we have here, all of the offensive players we have here, quite a few of them didn't play yesterday [against Arsenal] – Martial only came on in the last five minutes, Mason [Greenwood] didn't play at all.
"We have so many top players in the offensive department that we don't need to speak about any other players."
