Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang offers Arsenal contract update after Liverpool win

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang hinted his new Arsenal contract could be confirmed in the next few days after scoring the winning penalty in their Community Shield victory over Liverpool tonight.

Aubameyang, who netted both goals in the Gunners’ 2-1 FA Cup final win over Chelsea at the start of the month, picked up where he left off at Wembley by opening the scoring against the Premier League champions this evening.

When Bukayo Saka picked him out on the left flank with an inch-perfect cross-field pass, the Gabon international cut inside and curled the ball home expertly to fire Arsenal ahead in the 12th minute.

Takumi Minamino levelled proceedings for Liverpool with 17 minutes remaining, nonetheless, meaning penalty kicks were required at the national stadium.

Yet following Reds youngster Rhian Brewster’s miss in the shootout, Aubameyang was given the chance to sweep home the winning spot-kick for Arsenal – handing Mikel Arteta his second trophy in the space of four weeks.

The Gunners manager will now be desperate to see his star striker pen a contract extension before they kick off the new season away at Fulham on September 12, with just under a year remaining on his current deal.

And following another heroic outing at Wembley, Aubameyang hinted that his new contract could be just round the corner.

When asked for an update on his contract situation by BT Sport, the 31-year-old said: “We're going to see in these [next few] days.

“Today we take the trophy, that's it. We are improving.

“There is still work to do but I'm really happy and it's an exciting time to be an Arsenal player.”

Arteta was delighted with Aubameyang’s latest match-winning display, saying: “Big games, big moments, big players. He has responded really well to that kind of pressure. He was magnificent in the FA Cup final and the same today.”

When asked if his new contract is close, Arteta replied: “We are close.”

Aubameyang has been worth every penny of the £56million Arsenal spent to prise him away from Borussia Dortmund in January 2018, scoring an impressive 71 goals in 110 appearances for the club.
