Philippe Coutinho will join one of two Premier League clubs and a decision will be made on Friday over who that will be, according to reports. Six English sides are said to have shown an interest in signing Coutinho from Barcelona this month. But those options have been narrowed down significantly.

Coutinho has struggled with fitness and form during his four years at Barcelona.

The Brazil international has regularly been linked with a move back to the Premier League following his previous spell at Liverpool.

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is reported to be interested in signing his former Reds team-mate but gave nothing away at his press conference on Thursday.

Liverpool have been linked with a deal to bring Coutinho back to Anfield.

Arsenal have also long been linked with Coutinho due to their relationship with the player’s agent Kia Joorabchian.

Everton are another club said to be keen on the 29-year-old, as well as cash-rich Newcastle under their new Saudi Arabian owners.

Sky Sports have reported this week that there have been six English clubs interested in Coutinho.

But reporter Kaveh Solhekol gave an update on Thursday afternoon, revealing there are now only two teams remaining in the race.

“Yeah we’ve just got a message from somebody close to the player’s camp, who’s telling us now: ‘We are down to two clubs’,” Solhekol said on Sky Sports News.

“Of course we’ve been reporting over the last few days that five Premier League clubs are interested in signing Philippe Coutinho on loan from Barcelona.

“Barcelona have said he can leave, they want a deal done very, very quickly.

“Yesterday we told you it was five clubs, then a sixth club expressed an interest in signing him.

“The latest information we have, just came into me two minutes ago, just a message: ‘We are down to two clubs’. That is the latest on Philippe Coutinho.”

Later in the show, Solhekol revealed how his contact says a decision over what Coutinho’s next club will be should be made on Friday.

He added: “I went back and I asked ‘when are we going to get this decision?’. We were told it was going to be by the weekend.

“The message I’ve just got back is that a decision is expected by tomorrow afternoon.

“So we should know by tomorrow afternoon where Philippe Coutinho will be playing next.”

Solhekol initially refused to give any clues over the identity of the two clubs, replying: “No comment.”

He then said it will be quite obvious when the truth comes out.

“I think a lot of people can guess which two clubs we’re talking about,” Solhekol said.

“But obviously the people involved don’t want to say anything about the identity of the two clubs.

“But I think it’s obvious what the clubs are.”
