Neymar sends message to Bayern Munich after PSG's Champions League final defeat

Neymar has passed on his heartfelt congratulations to Bayern Munich after Paris Saint-Germain were defeated by their German opposition in last night’s Champions League final.

PSG came up short after reaching the final for the first time in their history, with Kingsley Coman heading home the only goal of the game just before the hour-mark in what was a cagey affair at Benfica’s Estadio da Luz.

It means Neymar – who missed a glorious chance in the first half – is yet to add to the European title he won with Barcelona back five years ago and the loss clearly hit the Brazilian hard.

Members of PSG’s management had to coax an emotional Neymar into collecting his runners-up medal before a mixture of team-mates and opposition players attempted to console the attacker on the pitch in Lisbon.

It would have been understandable if Neymar had avoided social media in the wake of such a devastating defeat but the forward took to Twitter late on Sunday night to applaud Bayern on their efforts.

‘Losing is part of the sport, we try everything, we fight until the end,’ the Brazil international said.

‘Thank you for the support and affection I have received, each and every one of you.

‘And CONGRATULATIONS to BAYER [sic].’

His misspelling of ‘Bayern’ provoked a brilliant response from Bayer Leverkusen – not that it would have cheered Neymar up too much.

‘Thank you, Neymar!’ the club’s official account replied.

‘I’m not sure why you congratulate me while I’m on vacation playing FIFA … but thanks.’

PSG head coach Tuchel cast doubt over his future when asked about speculation that he could be dismissed after the match.

‘I’m proud of our mentality over the past few weeks,’ the German said.

‘I have a contract, I do not know anything else.

Tuchel added: ‘It was a fight. I do not know if we could observe it on television but we gave everything on the field tonight.

‘I had the impression that the first goal was going to decide the fate of the game.

‘I’m proud of the way we played and our mentality over the last few weeks.’
