Neymar’s long-awaited return from injury did not go to plan on Saturday evening – with the Brazilian picking up a late red card in Paris St-Germain’s 1-0 defeat at home to Lille.

The French champions slumped to their eighth loss of the season against Christophe Galtier’s high-flying side, coming unstuck in an ill-tempered affair which ended with both teams being reduced to 10 men at the Parc des Princes.

Jonathan David turned in what proved the winner after 20 minutes, tapping home from Nanitamo Ikone’s cross to move Lille to the top of Ligue 1 with seven games to play.

PSG dominated the course of play, recording more than 60 per cent possession and carving out decent opportunities for both Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.

But after huffing and puffing to no avail, things turned ugly for the hosts when Neymar was brandished a second yellow card in stoppage time for retaliating to a challenge from Tiago Djalo.

After being barged by Djalo, the former Barcelona star shoved him to the ground before retrieving the ball.

He was subsequently shown a red card by the referee, which sparked fury as Neymar and his PSG team-mates protested the decision.

Djalo was also handed a second yellow over his role in the clash, and as they headed down the tunnel the pair had to be separated by security when a furious Neymar tried to get to the Lille star.
