Newcastle ‘to hold James Rodriguez talks with Everton’ following Bruce request

Newcastle are set to ‘hold James Rodriguez talks with Everton’ after manager Steve Bruce made a request.

The Colombian appears to be on the way out of Goodison Park after just one season, having arrived from Real Madrid for free last summer.

With Rafa Benitez’s predecessor Carlo Ancelotti heading to the Bernabeu, it has seen the midfielder drop out of his new manager’s plans.

And Italian outlet Calcio In Pillole have reported that the Magpies are the team looking to capitalise on the situation.

Transfer guru Ekrem Konur said on Twitter that Newcastle are set to ‘hold talks’ with Everton over Rodriguez ‘at Steve bruce’s request’.

The most northern side in the Premier League are looking to improve on last season’s 12th-place finish.

But they made a tough start, losing a thrilling 4-2 encounter to West Ham at St James’ Park in their opening game of the season.

They have only bought one player this season, signing Joe Willock permanently from Arsenal having taken him on loan since January.

The arrival of Rodriguez, though, would mean the arrival of a player who has five league titles and two Champions League honours to his name.

He won three consecutive Primera Liga honours with Porto before heading to Monaco and bursting onto the scene the following summer at the World Cup.

Scoring five goals to win the Golden Boot, it saw Real pay a reported £63m that year, scoring 17 goals in his first campaign.

But he fell out of favour with Zinedine Zidane, heading to Bayern on loan for two seasons before returning in 2019.

And the lure of Ancelotti brought him to Goodison Park, with the Italian’s exit this year appearing to send him on a spiral.

Rodriguez revealed on his Twitch stream on Thursday that he was unaware who Everton were playing this weekend after he told fans he will return to training on Monday.

He said: “I will start training on Monday, I think. On the weekend I will not play, I don't even know who Everton is playing, can you please tell me?

"I think it is away because the past was at home. Ah, against Leeds they play, away from home, against Bielsa, a difficult game, let's see what happens, hopefully they win."
