Newcastle have reportedly had a £32m bid rejected by Lille for Boubakary Soumare as Mike Ashley continues to spend.
The Toon have strengthened heavily this summer, adding Bournemouth duo Callum Wilson and Ryan Fraser to their ranks, as well as young Norwich full-back Jamal Lewis.
However, Newcastle owner Ashley is set to blow even more cash on improving the Steve Bruce’s squad.
The next man on their hit list is French midfielder Soumare, who plays for Lille in Ligue 1, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Soumare is a current France U21 international, and rose through the ranks at PSG before moving to Lille in 2017.
Newcastle clearly rate the 21-year-old highly, and even had a previous bid of the same amount – £32m – accepted in January, according to Sky Sports.
However, Soumare opted not to leave Lille for Tyneside, and a deal fell through.
Bruce’s latest addition to his squad was left-back Lewis from Norwich, who arrived for around £13m.
And the Northern Ireland international admitted that he was surprised a move to the north east came about.
Lewis told NUFC TV: “It was a little bit unexpected but it was something that I was obviously looking forward to when I heard that there was serious interest, so I'm delighted to be here now.
“Newcastle's such a great club with such history and I knew it was an opportunity I would love to take with both hands.”

While Bruce added: “Jamal is a very exciting prospect. I watched him flourish in the Championship two years ago and he made a real fist of it in the Premier League last season.
“He is only 22 years old and has a wonderful future ahead of him so I hope he is a Newcastle United full-back for years to come.
“It's been a great week for us with incoming players. We have had to be patient but these players improve us, which is key.”
