Arsenal youngster Matteo Guendouzi will return to north London at the end of his loan at Hertha Berlin, it has been claimed. Reports suggest Arsenal had wanted to sell him permanently to the Bundesliga side this summer, but the Germans have no interest.
Guendouzi faces an uncertain future at Arsenal this summer.
The young midfielder was allowed to leave on a season-long loan last year after falling out with Mikel Arteta.
It had been hoped that he would go and get regular first-team football at Hertha, but that hasn’t happened.
Instead, the defensive midfielder has managed just 14 starts in the Bundesliga as well as five appearances from the bench.
Arsenal have question marks over his attitude, it has been claimed in the past, and are believed to have wanted to sell him this summer.
German outlet BILD claims the Gunners wanted him to make his stay in Berlin permanent, and were looking forward to negotiations.
But instead, the Bundesliga side decided Guendouzi has no future there beyond the end of his loan.
As a result, he’ll return to the Emirates and battle for his place under Arteta.
Guendouzi is under contract at Arsenal until 2022, and it seems likely the Gunners will try and offload him elsewhere.
The young Frenchman recently dismissed that suggestion, however, and insisted he was looking forward to returning to the Premier League.
“I am focused on my season with Hertha Berlin,” Guendouzi said.
“Next, we will sit down with my entourage and people at the club to discuss the future.
“This summer will be a decisive moment.
“I belong to Arsenal for another year.
“From the moment that I am playing for Arsenal, I will give everything for the club, fans, team, and staff.
“I will work hard for the shirt as I have always done.”
