Manuel Neuer is ‘unlikely’ to be at Bayern Munich next season because the 34-year-old goalkeeper wants a five year contract extension.

The German wants assurances over his long-term future despite being in the latter stages of his career.

Former Bayern midfielder and World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus believes he will leave the club if he is not prepared to reassess his wishes.

The goalkeeper wants a five year extension which would see him at the club until the age of 39

‘I can understand his desire for security and a long contract very well. But five years is also a long time,’ he told Sky Deutschland

‘He should, as mentioned, not forget how loyal FC Bayern was to him in every phase. For both sides, it would be wonderful if Manuel stays a few years more.

‘He should first extend for three years and if he’s still healthy and performs he’ll get the next contract.

‘I think the signs are pointing to his departure.

‘He wants to play. He wants to play more often and longer. In light of his quality, that’s understandable.

‘Probably a little more was expected of him, and the expectations he put on himself were undoubtedly higher. I don’t think that he will still be playing in Munich next season.’

Neuer has spent nine years at the Allianz Arena but has been linked with a move to Chelsea who are looking to sign a goalkeeper after the poor form of Kepa Arrizabalaga.

The World Cup winner has kept 15 clean sheets in 37 games for Bayern this season including 10 in the Bundesliga.

He has won a total of 18 trophies, including seven Bundesliga titles, since making the move from Schalke in 2011.

While Neuer has not yet signed a new contract, his team-mate Thomas Muller has committed his future to the club by penning a new deal that runs until 2023.

The goalkeeper was one of a number of Bayern players to return to training yesterday with football still postponed due to the coronavirus.

The squad were only able to train in small groups with many taking part in one-on-one drills.
